Reportedly your favorite big brother, Google, is looking at the feasibility of using IR-emitting cameras to count how often people look at physical advertising spaces. Then the advertiser can only pay for their actual impressions. We’ve done some close up work on eye and gaze tracking with infrared in our laboratory but it sounds like they are getting them to work from a bit further away, but certainly not for roadside billboard distance yet.

I was just thinking though, what if the advertiser wasn’t very good at designing eye-catching billboards, and nobody looked at it? The advertiser isn’t getting many impressions, but they also aren’t paying much. What about the poor person who rents the billboard space? Maybe they have to set an interestingness threshold.

It appears you need to bung an ‘Australia’ on the end of most searches for it to work though, which explains why I haven’t noticed it working ’cause I didn’t ever do that – I just figured that if the map was already in Australia it would assume I wanted to stay there. Example. You still can’t get directions happening yet.

On Google’s official research blog (they have a research blog? subscribed!) they report that they are going to release via LDC a huge database on the statistical occurence of word sequences.

We believe that the entire research community can benefit from access to such massive amounts of data. It will advance the state of the art, it will focus research in the promising direction of large-scale, data-driven approaches, and it will allow all research groups, no matter how large or small their computing resources, to play together. That’s why we decided to share this enormous dataset with everyone. We processed 1,011,582,453,213 words of running text and are publishing the counts for all 1,146,580,664 five-word sequences that appear at least 40 times. There are 13,653,070 unique words, after discarding words that appear less than 200 times.

This could be very useful for a lot of speech research. Link. Thanks, Google Blogoscoped.
