So here is some ‘freedback’ on democracy player, version 0.9.0:

Why can’t I view my videos in chronological order? When I don’t watch videos for a while, or I want to look at my collection the videos always appear to be stored in reverse chronological order. It is very difficult to watch them in the order they were posted.

I’m still having problems with videos from Revver, such as ze frank and ask a ninja. Sometimes they work, sometimes they flash, sometimes they don’t show any video at all. Audio works fine, though.

Because I’m having trouble with videos not working, or maybe I need to get some work done when I haven’t finished a video, I would please like a ‘mark-as-unwatched’ option.

These issues aside, Democracy Player is the best platform for watching video podcasts that I have found. Thanks for the great app.

UPDATE: Apparently the flashing is a VLC issue in Windows. Democracy have milestoned it to be fixed in 0.9.2.

I have recently had some problems getting my new phone from Techoni, and I though I would let google-searchers know what is happening by putting it up here.

So, Today I talked to Minta at Techoni, and sent an email to info@techoni.com.au in the hope it would end up at someone in charge of returns.

To the returns manager,

I purchased an ETEN M500 via your website (www.techoni.com.au) a month ago (8th August 2006) and was incorrectly sent a chinese language phone instead of english. While I have since received the correct phone (on the 30th August), I have not received back the Windows Mobile 2005 upgrade CD I received with the original (chinese) phone which I returned with the phone, as advised to by your customer service staff.

I have since talked to your customer service staff on several ocassions to obtain this CD. In the first instance, I was advised that this was an oversight, and that the CD would be sent. More recently, they informed me that I would not be getting a Windows Mobile 2005 upgrade as the ETEN promotion has ended. This is not acceptable to me as the promotion was clearly still occuring when I purchased my device originally, *as I had received an upgrade CD at the time*. When I asked that the upgrade CD I returned be sent back, I was informed by your staff that the upgrade CD was chinese language also, but this is not the case. I can confirm this as I had originally made a copy of that CD (my main computer doesn’t have an optical drive), and looking at the contents I can clearly see that it is the english version. Unfortunately I need the authorisation codes that were on the packaging to use the contents of the CD.

Clearly there has been a misunderstanding here, and all I would like is to receive the original CD back, or if it has been misplaced, a new Windows Mobile 2005 upgrade CD for my ETEN M500. If this cannot be arranged, I would like to organise a full refund for my purchase as you haven’t supplied me with the goods as advertised on your website.

As an aside, I do acknowledge that your website did say “limited offer” for the Windows Mobile 2005 upgrade. Your website however, did not state any conditions or limitations, so when I purchased the item I had a reasonable expectation that I was purchasing a phone with the upgrade CD.

I have tried to resolve this issue with your staff over the phone, to no avail. If you cannot give me the upgrade CD or provide me with a full refund, I will have no choice but to file a complaint with the NSW Office of Fair Trading, with whom I have already discussed this case in detail.

Thank you for your time,

David Dean

Update: I have talked to one of your support staff, Minta, and she has indicated that she will give ETEN a call and try and get an upgrade CD, and call me within two days.

Perhaps I should have done a little more research beforehand. I’ll post an update if anything exciting happens.

UPDATE (18/9): Richard at Techoni called me to let me know that a they have sent an upgrade CD my way. It should arrive in a couple of days.

UPDATE (20/9): The CD arrived yesterday. Thank you Techoni.

Did you know that you can use WaveSurfer to view transcribed (or to perform transcription on) videos as well as audio? I do now: just install the plugin available here.
Word of warning tho: It says

Did you know that you can use WaveSurfer to view transcribed (or to perform transcription on) videos as well as audio? I do now: just install the plugin available here.

Word of warning tho: It says

Web-based install: In WaveSurfer, select Plug-ins from the File menu. Under Plug-ins available for installation, select video and click install.

I don’t know where that is. I have the latest version of Wavesurfer (I just downloaded it) and no such option exists in the file menu. Just follow the manual install instructrions (which I have edited slightly – in bold)

Manual installation (Windows): Download and open http://www.speech.kth.se/wavesurfer/video.zip . Put the files video.plug and QuickTimeTcl.dll the WaveSurfer plugins directory %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\.wavesurfer\1.8\plugins for WaveSurfer 1.8.*, where HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH are Windows environment variables (in most cases the directory will be C:\Documents and Settings\username\.wavesurfer\1.8\plugins). Optionally, also put Video.conf in your configurations directory.

UPDATE: I guess this is an example of freedback, so I’ve added that category/tag. (More freedback here)
