Folksonomy rating-based recommendations

Posted on January 26, 2005

I’ve had an idea for a while about implementing ratings in a folksonomy system (del.icio.us, flickr, technorati, etc.) so that some clever bot can come along and using some sort of Amazon-esque algorithm, find me more stuff that I would like.

My idea goes something like this:

  • Everybody agrees on a set of tags that would indicate a rating (I’m currently using rating/*, rating/**, rating/***, rating/**** and rating/*****).
  • Everybody tags anything they feel like rating/reviewing with one of these tags based on how much they like it.
  • A clever bot looks at what I like and dislike, finds some other people who are similar, and tells me what they have found that I don’t know about yet.
  • I learn about new stuff that I might well like.

What do you think?

UPDATE: I have found a few users that are using tags of the form rating:90%, but it doesn’t appear to be widespread either. Smilies ( :-) ) seem to be popular too.

I would argue that when you are social tagging, you are, in fact, making recommendations. You propose going one step further by rating your tags.

I approach “rating” within folksonomy by proposing we rate the taggers.
