I’m looking for good mirroring software for windows

Posted on November 24, 2004

I might give these people a try, they look fairly professional: Backup4all. Currently I am using FileSync by FileWare, but that company appears to be out of business, and it still isn’t quite what I want. (ie. it can’t tell when something has changed in both locations, and it can’t tell when something has been deleted.)

UPDATE: I emailed the guys at Backup4All to ask about their software, and they said it wouldn’t do what I wanted, and recommended Araxis Merge or Beyond Compare. Araxis Merge is too expensive (around $US 120), so I’ll have a look at Beyond Compare.

First Impressions of Beyond Compare: Good, but needs

  • Ability to tell when files have changed on both sides. (Can be done by storing last copy date in session file)
  • Ability to tell when files have been deleted. (Can be done by storing the list of all files in the session file, and if the file was in that list, it has been deleted, else it is new)
  • Ability to tell when files have been moved. (Can be done by looking for matching orphans on both the source and target)
  • Better support for bidirectional synchronisation

I’ll keep playing.

After I’ve read your remarks on scootersoftware forums, i suggest you to take a look at http://www.gelosoft.com/, i’ve evaluate Synchromagic a long time ago and it seems better for synchronize, the strong point of Beyond Compare is to detect/display/visually synchronize difference between files/directory.
