Fujitsu Microelectronics, among others, has touted sweep sensors, in which the user sweeps the finger over the sensor, as a way to drive the price out of fingerprint-recognition technology. Because the sweep sensor needs only a single row of sensor elements, the sensor itself costs far less than one in which you press the entire finger on a 2-D sensing array. Moreover, the sweep sensor can capture a large fingerprint, thereby minimizing the chance of errors.
